What Type of Education Is Needed?
Usually, a structured cabling technician is required to have a high school diploma or a GED. If you have gone to college or have a degree or certificate from a vocational or technical school, even better. You will begin training under a senior technician who will be responsible for teaching you terminology, industry standards, legal regulations, and more. You will be coached and mentored on telecommunications, security, data, and wireless systems.

If you have past experience in structured cabling, here are some other skills that employers and hiring managers value:
Past experience reviewing and completing work orders to move, change, install, repair, or remove data communications equipment, such as cabling POS, CCTV, computer terminals, audio systems, DVRs, digital signage, traffic monitoring systems and analytics, as well as wireless RF units.
The ability to connect computers or terminals to data communications lines.
·An understanding of how to inspect and test wiring to locate and repair problems as well as confirm specifications are met.
The capability of planning layouts and installing data communications equipment while also demonstrating its usage.
The ability to read technical manuals to learn correct settings for equipment.
